Law Reform Commission devotes journal to Animal Law

Posted on Mar 4th, 2008 by alextababa : Ali alextababa
This report from Voiceless, Australia's priceless fund for Animals:

Voiceless applauds the Australian Law Reform Commission for devoting the current edition of its twice yearly publication, Reform, to the subject of Animal Law.

... Animal Law in Australia is a cutting edge discipline which is rapidly emerging as an area for academic scholarship in the nation’s leading law schools. The University of New South Wales and Griffith University have pioneered animal law courses in recent years, while the University of Sydney, The University of Wollongong and Bond University have recently incorporated animal law into their curriculum.

... Brian Sherman AM, director of Voiceless said today, “In championing the cause of Animal Law the Australian Law Reform Commission has shone the spotlight on Australia’s next great social justice movement, the protection of animals. Currently animals have no rights in law. Their status is as mere property. For animals to receive more meaningful protections, they need to be recognised legally through a change in the current law. The seeds of change are being sown and cultivated by animal lawyers every day.”

... By nurturing and encouraging the practice of Animal Law through the pages of Reform, the ALRC has helped to lay the foundations of a process that will see animals gaining access to justice and getting a fair go.
